Drivers 'double risk of accidents' after smoking cannabis

Drivers who smoke cannabis before driving double their risk of having an accident, new research has revealed. A report published by the British Medical Journal revealed 18 per cent of people killed in road crashes had illegal drugs in their system. Cannabis was discovered to be the most common and those who smoke the drug three hours before embarking on a journey seriously compromise their safety. Deputy Chief Executive at road safety charity Brake Julie Townsend said tackling the issue of drug driving must be a "top priority" for the government. Currently, police have to prove impairment if they catch people behind the wheel with drugs in their body, as there is no law against doing this. Ms Townsend said there needs to be "urgent action to bring in this desperately needed change in the law - taking a tough, zero tolerance stance." At the end of last month, figures from the Association of Chief Police Officers revealed police conducted 540 impairment tests following concerns about drug driving in December.
